Just a day after turning 50, Scott Verplank teed off for his first round ever as a member of the Champions Tour.
Verplank became the immediate favorite being the youngest player in the field on his home course. However, his first round left something to be desired.
Verplank shot an opening round 75, which is 4 over for the tournament. He had a tee shot on 4 go into the water and he topped a tee shot on 15 resulting in a drive of just 50 yards.
Dr. Gil Morgan had the best showing of any of the “Oak Tree Gang.” At 67 years young, Morgan fired an opening round 72, finishing at 1 over. This is rumored to be Dr. Gil’s final run at a major since he plans on slowing his golf schedule down.
Both Willie Wood and Bob Tway shot 3 over 74’s to begin their fight towards a major title on their home course. Both are 9 shots back of leader Colin Montgomerie.
3rd and 4th round coverage can be seen on NewsChannel 4 this weekend.
