Gene Sauers matched the low round of the day with a 68 to finish the third round at 7-under par and take a three-shot lead going into the final round of the U.S. Senior Open at Oak Tree National in Edmond.

Sauers birdied two of the last three holes, and carded only one bogey on his round.

A beautiful approach shot on #16 settled within a foot of the cup, leading to a birdie to get him the lead by himself at 6-under par.

Sauers took control late after five different golfers had at least a share of the lead, including a four-way tie for the lead at one point.

First and second round leader Colin Montgomerie struggled off the tee and in the fairway today, finishing with a 74 and is 3-under par, four shots back.

Montgomerie started nicely, with birdies at #1 and #3, and got to 8-under par, with a four shot lead.

He quickly lost the lead and gave three other golfers a shot at taking charge.

Montgomerie bogeyed three of the last six holes and did not speak to the media after his round.

Bernhard Langer and Scott Dunlap are tied for second place at 4-under par, but Langer had a chance to be the leader if not for several lipped out putts.

Marco Dawson once had a share of the lead, but finished with two bogeys and had a 69 to finish at 2-under par.

The Oklahoma golfers once again did not have a good day.

Gil Morgan shot a 73 and is the best of the local golfers at 8-over par.

Both former Oral Roberts University golfer and Stillwater resident Bill Glasson and Oak Tree’s Bob Tway are at 9-over par.   

Glasson shot a 76 and Tway shot 75.

Willie Wood had the worst round of the local golfers with a 77 and is 11-over par.l
