Scotland’s Colin Montgomerie shot a 6-under par 65 to take the first round lead at the U.S. Senior Open at Oak Tree National in Edmond.

Montgomerie leads Marco Dawson by one shot after the first 18 holes.

Mark Brooks is three shots back at 3-under par, then five golfers follow at 2-under par.

On a hot day that saw play start an hour late due to a lightning delay in the morning, Montgomerie played early, posted a good score and nobody could match it.

Brooks’ 3-under 68 was the best of the afternoon scores.

On the whole, Oklahoma golfers did not play well on Thursday.

67-year-old Dr. Gil Morgan was the best of the locals, shooting a one-over par 72.

Morgan was playing with fellow Oak Tree residents Bob Tway and Willie Wood, who both shot 3-over par 74.

Scott Verplank turned 50 on Wednesday, and in his first competitive round on the Champions Tour, shot four-over par 75.

Former Oral Roberts University golfer and Stillwater resident Bill Glasson fired a two-over par 72.

One of the favorites to win, Bernhard Langer, is among the group at 2-under par.

1988 PGA Champion Jeff Sluman, who won at Oak Tree, shot a one-under par 70.
